TMJ pain (Temporomandibular Joint)/Jaw pain

TMD (Temporomandibular joint dysfunction) is a common complaint that causes jaw pain, inability to open the mouth wide and headaches. It can be effectively treated with physiotherapy treatment. Treatment will often consist of manual therapy to the joint and surrounding soft tissue structures, exercise therapy and advice re swelling and pain management.

However, in addition, studies have shown that the use of Botox (a neurotoxin that temporarily paralyses muscles) can significantly reduce pain and increase mouth movements following treatment. A small amount of Botox is injected into the muscles that move the jaw. This can also reduce teeth grinding and jaw clenching which can also be associated with TMJ pain.
