Acne

June is ‘Acne Awareness Month’

Our blog contains some useful information regarding why acne may occur and tips on how to prevent it…..

Causes of Acne

Acne is one of the most common skin concerns in the UK. The most common causes of acne are due to genetics, bacteria, stress, lifestyle (such as smoking and poor diet), hormones, pregnancy and puberty. According to the NHS, approximately 95% of people aged 11 - 30 are affected by acne and about 3% of adults over 35 years are also troubled with acne.

Why does Acne Occur?

Acne can occur when the pores n the skin become blocked by dead skin cells and excess sebum (oil) production. Bacteria then gets into the clogged pores, leading to inflammation and acne cysts.

Key Skin Care Ingredients that Help Acne Prone Skin

  • AHA’s e.g., Salicylic Acid, Glycolic Acid – AHA’s are abrasive and therefore effectively unblock clogged pores. They also reduce sebum production, reducing blackheads, blemishes and breakouts.

  • Niacinamide – has strong anti-inflammatory properties. This reduces redness and swelling and also decreases the amount of sebum production which adds to acne developing. It also helps to fade acne scars.

  • Hyaluronic Acid - helps control sebum production and reduces appearance of acne scars.

  • Antioxidants – e.g., vitamin A, C, E, green tea extract.
