Skin Care Routine

Why is a Good Skin Care Routine Important?

Good skin care is important at any age. The skin has strong collagen and elastin production in the first few decades of life, but it decreases over time. A good skincare routine helps regenerate skin cell production to keep the skin looking it’s best and to prevent premature skin ageing. In addition to improving skin health, using an effective skin care routine provides a good base to the face prior to the application of makeup. This ultimately optimises both the appearance and longevity of the makeup.

We often get asked by patients, ‘What order should I layer my products in and does the order really matter?’ The answer to this is yes! Applying skin care products in the wrong order will prevent some products being absorbed effectively. You therefore won’t achieve optimum results and end up wasting product and money. A good habit to get into is to follow the order of product layer below:

Order of Product Layering

1) Cleanser - Contain ingredients that allow water to rinse away dirt and sweat. They can also remove the oils collected by an oil-based cleanser.

2) Toner - Toners are designed to replenish skin through hydration and remove dead cells and dirt left behind after cleansing.

3) Serum - Face serum stimulates collagen production in your skin, and depending on the specific type of serum, contains vitamins essential for healthy skin. Using a serum helps to improve firmness of the skin and reduces fine lines and wrinkles.

4) Eye Cream - Eye cream can brighten, smooth, and firm up the delicate area around the eyes.

5) Moisturiser - A moisturizer will soothe, hydrate, and soften the skin.

6) SPF - Protects against harmful UV rays responsible for skin cancers and premature ageing.

General rule of Thumb: Apply the lightest product first, the heaviest product last as thinner products cannot penetrate thicker products.
